Cultivation Notes:
D. quadrangulatum should be planted above its grade, in an area with plenty of space and good drainage. It is suited to fully sunny, as well as lightly shady locations. It takes many years for the Mexican grass tree to lift off the ground to its 'tree' form.
Ethnobotany:
D. quadrangulatum is valued for its lack of spines, as it is suitable for high traffic areas. The Mexican grass tree is also more green than other sotols, which provides a sharp contrast against desert foliage. In landscapes, it can be planted by itself, in a large container, or next to a pool, as it requires little care.
The Mexican grass tree is hardy to 15°F, and grows best when watered once or twice a month.
