Characteristics:
The sonoran tree beargrass has many fibrous, dark green leaves. These leaves are one to one and a half inches wide and three to four feet long. This shrub has a pendulous form and is a winter evergreen, meaning it will not lose its leaves during winter.

N. matapensis is an endemic to the Sonoran Desert. In the mountinou wodlands at elevations of 3,500.to 6,000. These desert dwellers also populate in Chihuahuan, Mexico (2).
Cultivation Notes:
Sonoran tree beargrass plants are drought tolerant once established, but will grow faster and develop a trunk more rapidly if it is given supplemental water during spring and summer. These plants prefer well drained soils. A fertilizer high in nitrogen may be beneficial for increasing growth rate, but is not necessary. These plants are virtually maintenance free, avoid prolonged cold periods.
