The sonoran tree beargrass has many fibrous, dark green leaves. These leaves are one to one and a half inches wide and three to four feet long. This shrub has a pendulous form and is a winter evergreen, meaning it will not lose its leaves during winter.

Natural History: N. matapensis is an endemic to the Sonoran Desert. In the mountinou wodlands at elevations of 3,500.to 6,000. These desert dwellers also populate in Chihuahuan, Mexico (2).
Cultivation Notes: Sonoran tree beargrass plants are drought tolerant once established, but will grow faster and develop a trunk more rapidly if it is given supplemental water during spring and summer. These plants prefer well drained soils. A fertilizer high in nitrogen may be beneficial for increasing growth rate, but is not necessary. These plants are virtually maintenance free, avoid prolonged cold periods.
