The F. paradoxa leaves are pinnate shaped and dark green above, white or reddish below. It is a deciduous shrub that grows the best in full sun and is soil tolerant. It has clusters of pink or purple one-inch-long fuzzy seed tails that form into a fuzzy ball.

Natural History:
The Apache plume is native to the entire Southwest of the United States. It has been distributed through out the states to Arizona, southern California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, western Texas, southern and central Utah, and northern New Mexico (2).
Cultivation Notes:
This species is densely branched with shredded bark. It grows best in full sun and is very low water usage.
Ethnobotany:
Due to its high soil tolerance, it can be used as a border plant or erosion control in landscapes.
