This shrub thrives in USDA hardiness zones 9-11, tolerates high temperatures, but may suffer freeze damage in USDA zone 8 and regrow from its roots. It needs well drained soil, with a pH range of 6.1-8.5 (slightly acidic to alkaline) and adapts to most soil types. If given supplemental water in summer and in full sun, it will grow more quickly and produce more flowers. Being vulnerable to root rot, however, it should not be over-watered. There is also a trade-off between growth and attracting butterflies. Being in light shade at least part of the day will attract more butterflies over a longer period. Too much shade results in leggy growth. This plant blooms on new growth and a light trim in late fall or early winter is recommended. It is propagated by cuttings from new growth.
