Characteristics: Echinocactus horizonthalonius subsp. nicholii is a gray-green cactus with nodes, and seven to thirteen ribs. Along its ribs are spine clusters, each of which contains three central spines and five radial spines. Fruits are covered in wooly hairs.

 The E. horizonthalonius is native to Mexico (Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Nuevo Le) (2).



Cultivation Notes: E. horizonthalonius is a low maintenance plant which grows best in full sun. It is semi-hardy, and can withstand temperatures down to 25°F.
Ethnobotany: Usually, the blue barrel cactus grows solitary, but occasionally in clumps. E. horizonthalonius can also be grown as a container plant in landscaping. Its flowers attract bees.
