Natural History: This species is widely distributed in Mexico, the southeastern USA and in some Central American and Caribbean countries (6). From the SE US, it extends south into Veracruz and Oaxaca (6) at elevations between approximately 1300 and 3200 feet above sea level (7).
Cultivation Notes: The Bastard Cherry does not deal well with constant sunlight (4), it needs shade or else it won’t function normally. It only needs a moderate amount of water to deter the flowers and leaves from dying. Although it’s located in the Virgin Islands it probably won’t have to deal with any problems involving droughts.
Ethnobotany: This tree yields flowers, which pollinate leading to it producing seeds (2) that can be consumed by both humans and animals. This plant can also provide shelter for any animal willing to climb its shrub (3). It provides shade to any human or animal trying to escape the heat.
