Natural History: The simpleleaf chastetree is a common coastal ornamental that originated in the Mediterranean and has now spread to such areas as Tahiti, North Australia and even East Africa (2).
Cultivation Notes: The simpleleaf chastetree grows best in well-draining soils and can even be grown in sand dunes as well (2). It is important to not over water this tree nor let it get too dry as this will cause the tree to develop improperly. If propagating from seed you must sow in a well-draining soils as soon as collected (2). If taking cuttings make sure the tree is not flowering and is placed in a well-draining rooting medium (2).
Ethnobotany: Although it is generally grown as an ornamental, this tree has quite a few medicinal benefits as well (2). In Africa it has been noted that the fruits produced from this tree can improve nutrition, and help with sustainable land care (2). In the Cook Islands the leaves are used to help treat female alignment (1, 2) and in Samoa the leaves, when burned, are used to reduce fevers and repel mosquitos (1). Scientist have also made observations that certain oils from the flowers can be extracted and used to help relieve symptoms of PMS for females (1). Currently the tree is being tested for potential antibacterial properties (3).
