Characteristics:

Thelocactus lauserri is very distinguishable due to its small white flowers that can be observed to have a pink central stripe. Flowers are funnel shaped and between 25 and 45 mm long (1). The grayish green stems are divided into ribs, spherical, and short, ranging from 7-10 cm tall to 5-8 cm wide (1).  The Tubercles are rounded and range from 5-9 mm wide and 8-12mm in height (1). The areoles are round and typically 5-6 mm in diameter (1). Central spines range from 6-10 cm long and 2 to 5 mm at the base. These spines are typically brown, white , red or yellowish in color (1). A secondary defense are the radial spines which range from 18-28 mm in length. These radial spines are a silvery white or yellow shade of color (1). This cactus will start forming buds during the months of early fall. Flowers will start to bloom between the months of January and February (1).

Natural History:

Thelocactus lausseri is native to parts of North America. Specifically regions of Mexico such as Sierra de las Ovejas in Coahuila (1).

Cultivation Notes:

Thelocactus lauserri is typically grown from seeds because the plant will rarely produce plantlets. The seeds grow best in well drained sandy soils during spring months when temperatures are warm. If you are planting this seed in a pot it is best to place a lid such as a piece of glass on top of the pot for 1-2 weeks, which should increase humidity levels (1). High amounts of humidity during early stages of growth should help promote the seed to germinate. Next place a light shade cloth over the pot and mist the cactus 1-2 times a day (1). This cacti thrives in environments with adequate ventilation and a dry atmosphere. It can survive in moderate shade but grows best in high temperatures with sunlight exposure. It can tolerate winter temperatures as low as 41 degrees fahrenheit. Low light quality can result in irregular shape and poor growth (1).  Water moderately during spring and summer but keep completely dry during the winter months. This species has a tendency to rot and die ( especially new transplants) if oversaturated with water (1).
