Salvia x jamensis is an herbaceous, perennial herb, evergreen in frost-free regions, with a moderate to rapid growth rate. The flowers are similar to Salvia greggii in shape, colored red, red and white, or white, depending on temperature during flower bud formation, with high temperatures resulting in all white. Cultivation Notes:
Locate this plant in one-quarter to three-quarters shade; avoid full sun and full shade. It is somewhat heat tolerant and drought tolerant in part shade. Once established, water once or twice a month in mostly shade, weekly in mostly sun. Over-watering results in a leggy appearance. The soil must be well drained, with a pH range of 6.1-7.8 (slightly acidic to slightly alkaline). This plant survives in USDA hardiness zones 8-10. It is killed to the ground by hard freezes but will come back from its roots. In frost-free zones, pruning must be limited to shaping; do not remove more than one-third of the growth. The plant can be propagated by dividing the rootball, layering, and seed. Seed will not breed true to the parents.

Ethnobotany: This plant is an ornamental, used in partly shaded locations.
