Characteristics: Buddleja marrubiifolia is an evergreen shrub growing at a moderate rate to 5' high and wide. The leaves are ovate, with crenate (round toothed) margins, 1" long, and densely covered in hairs imparting a gray to silvery-white color. The aromatic, tiny orange flowers are arranged in ball-shaped clusters about 1/2" across, and bloom sporadically spring to fall. The fruit is inconspicuous. The thornless, herbaceous stems turn woody slowly from the bottom up.

Natural History:
This plant's native habitat is in ditches, ravines, depressions, hillsides, and slopes of the Chihuahuan desert. It attracts butterflies, primarily on the first day of bloom, but over several days if the plant is in part shade rather than full sun.

Cultivation Notes:
This shrub thrives in USDA hardiness zones 9-11, tolerates high temperatures, but may suffer freeze damage in USDA zone 8 and regrow from its roots. It needs well drained soil, with a pH range of 6.1-8.5 (slightly acidic to alkaline) and adapts to most soil types. If given supplemental water in summer and in full sun, it will grow more quickly and produce more flowers. Being vulnerable to root rot, however, it should not be over-watered. There is also a trade-off between growth and attracting butterflies. Being in light shade at least part of the day will attract more butterflies over a longer period. Too much shade results in leggy growth. This plant blooms on new growth and a light trim in late fall or early winter is recommended. It is propagated by cuttings from new growth.

Ethnobotany:
B. marrubiifolia is a care-free ornamental plant with a long, if sporadic, blooming period and is well suited for xeriscaping. It can be used as an informal hedge or in groupings with accent plants. However, in Arizona, other plants are known to attract far more butterflies and it is not considered a significant butterfly attractor.
